Hints and tips on equipment

On this page we want to give some suggestions for the search, either on its own equipment based on a representation of another feud of Soest Zeitrahmes to adapt, or build a new equipment.

Since this event is over, we keep this article as general information on our site.

General Tips

  • Best give only a general overview of the fashion, the forms and the drapery of the century (see: Sources and Literature )
  • Then the differences between the halves of the century, and any fashion trends and developments make
  • Then specialize, and (for example, on a narrower time window in 1450 ) and a region (which can also mean: country) fix
  • Just make the best possible image sources from their own country, ideally in their own region (eg North or South) to rate, and the only other comparison
  • Consider representations from the frame falling critically, what the artist wanted to express with possibly a little more stress a person out to stigmatize, etc.?
  • work your clothing and equipment from the simple people to whom high. Fashion is spread mainly by the richer classes and promoted, so the observation of persons who are socially and forth to the wealth of what one seeks, deceptively fast
  • Starting simply: deal only with the basic equipment. A high level of representation takes years, if not decades of work

Fashion in the Late Middle Ages

Our concept of "fashion" is coined very Modern, was but the beginning of the late Middle Ages in the second half of the 13th, and according to current estimates in the first half of the 14th century. Unlike today, in the Middle Ages clothing was much more through representation function, practical requirements and constraints of society, characterized precisely in the late Middle Ages Laws: a "self-realization" of the medieval man did not, and certainly not in the clothes. Was deferred to another are almost only on professional level, we tried each of the lower classes to distinguish, and the state is determined only by money. By his peers, however no one tries to distinguish: the medieval society was strongly influenced by social structures. Who dissociated themselves marginalized, from intentionally, and learned in the worst case of total exclusion, which coincided with economic decline.

From about the middle of the 14th century happened, what is known in the costume design to "Vergeschlechterung 'clothing: the clothes became the body emphasis as a fashion principle, and the fashion of a man separated visually much stronger in leg and Obebekleidung, and thus excluded from the long dresses of the women, even though there was still a long clothing for men. This development culminated in the body contouring the body through tight clothing, which was at certain points and fed heavily padded, and very rigid, reinforced clothing, in certain forms of forced or formed. The tip of the development we know today in the (now almost all female) corset that eventually occurred with certainty in the familiar form with sewn-in more or less rigid reinforcements in the 16th century. However, until now, (and after) the formation not limited to the ladies: the men searched the jeweilge acquire fashionable ideal, which consisted principally from the middle of the 14th century when a narrow waist and a variously shaped chest and upper body.

Fashion in the 15th century

The 15th century saw the transformation of fashion in the 14th century began, and changing the shape radiopaque enactment is just during or shortly after the Zeitrahm Feud of Soest: the emphasis on the waist by a long, narrow lap and rounded chest turned into an emphasis on the abdomen, as we know them from the 16th CENTURY: the typical, late-Gothic form hand signals with narrow waist, broad shoulders or chest, and rounded front is formed. This development can also be seen in the armor: chest the ball in the late 14th century, which empties into the box chest, is now to late Gothic chest developed.

The Ladies Fashion in turn sees the growing ideal of snakes, waist-stressed upper body and small, round breasts in a wide skirt falling into the development of the separate skirt portion which separates but only in the 16th century by the upper body clothing. Overall, however, applies here the ideal: it should be tight, outer garments in large folds are worn over body shaping and body-hugging dresses.

The equivalent exists in men's fashion in the direction indicated by different terms jacket with sewn in various lengths, defined or otherwise artificially accentuated folds besides tight clothing is worn. In the time frame of the Feud of Soest is the close Outerwear (above the doublet) of the second half of the century previouse largely out of fashion even knows where the diversity of other representatives.

Furthermore, the gown continue living as long, mostly simple form of outerwear from previouse centuries, and obscured also worn underneath the jacket.

Body stress versus exposure

Contrary to what many authors to read my text from the medieval world, which knows well above all the hyperbole of zealots, emphasis is not the same exposure. The Middle Ages was not a prude, but remains in the 15th century, and particularly in the Derst half of the century, the thigh of the man to some degree been what we today would call "erogenous zone", and these to move through too-short tops in the eye, can really afford to only the young dandy, or hard-working people, which for practical reasons can not afford a conceit. Step and underwear but remain covered, the doublet is up in the second half of the century as well as such.

Recommendation for the development of clothing and equipment for the time frame of the Soest Feud of fashion and equipment of other centuries

  • The simplest clothing of their own century as a select basis
  • The simplest representation of select target
  • Concentrate initially on the top layer, so matching coat or tunic before making a doublet, matching petticoat dress, etc. before a narrower
  • Simply choose to be obtained and details to be implemented for the addition of fashion (eg, matching hat)
  • Long-term thinking, the event will be repeated every 2 years
  • Meet with actors of the time frame (or the 15th century in general) in person, and can the fashion show: details are often difficult to see in pictures, if you are no longer so concerned
  • Omit the typical objects of their own time frame, even if it is
  • Superior to the best extent to which the simplest clothing of the desired time frame with the simplest of their own correlated, if not already exist: perhaps you can provide for a broader, their own time with leg-holding time under a very simple clothes (example: a simple gown with buttons)
  • Think even with the armor and weapons acquisition in the long term: rather a good aconite as a very bad Schaller, rather than a bad one good Pike sword
  • Clothing before armor and weapons!
  • Speak with the performers Zeitrahmes, and let you give tips for cheap sources of supply for basic equipment (belt, knife, etc.)
  • Not based on clothing from France / Burgundy / Flanders, etc.: this was a nature very different!
